Great Yorkshire Show

Plan your journey around traffic control for the Great Yorkshire Show

7 July 2016

As the Great Yorkshire Show returns to Harrogate Showground next week, people are being asked to plan their journeys more carefully, to avoid delays.

It is expected to attract up to 50,000 visitors each day, bringing an additional 16,000 vehicles a day to Harrogate town centre’s roads.

North Yorkshire County Council’s highways team is advising everyone travelling to Harrogate or across the region on show days – from Tuesday, 12 July, to Thursday, 14 July – to take this into account and plan their journeys accordingly.

Event organiser the Yorkshire Agricultural Society has employed a contractor to undertake traffic management for the event and directional signs will be erected on all major routes into Harrogate from as far away as the A1 at Wetherby and Boroughbridge.

There will be one-way traffic flow towards the town on the A658 between Thistle Hill and the A661 Wetherby Road, and also A661 Wetherby Road from the A658 to Rudding Lane between 6am and 2pm. The traffic flow will be reversed from 2pm to 9pm to provide one-way flow out of town between Rudding Lane and the A658.

Restrictions will also be in place on some other roads to manage traffic flow. It is likely that there will be congestion on local routes.

County Councillor Don Mackenzie, Executive Member for Highways, said:

The Great Yorkshire Show is a traditional part of the county’s calendar and an important event for the area. To help the show run smoothly, every effort is being made to keep traffic moving for visitors and locals. To help traffic flow and minimise disruption, we urge everyone driving to the show and into Harrogate to follow the official signed routes rather than use satellite navigation or routes perceived as shortcuts.

We are doing all we can to ensure that no road works are programmed by County Council contractors or any utility contractors in the Harrogate area during the week of the show.

More information about arrangements on the roads can be found at www.northyorks.gov.uk/roadworks

A free shuttle bus will run from the bus station in Harrogate town centre to the Showground and there are also great walking and cycling routes, including the newly constructed Showground Greenway, which links to the nearby Hornbeam Railway station.

Cycle parking is available at the Showground. Further information about travel and transport arrangements is on the Great Yorkshire Show website at greatyorkshireshow.co.uk/visitors/travel
