The achievements of the over 4,000 strong workforce at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust were celebrated in the sunshine with a jam-packed Family Fun Day on Sunday 29 June 2016.

The Celebrating Success Awards celebrate the good practice and innovation of staff, and was the eighth occasion they’ve been held.

The day, at Harrogate Rugby Club, was also an opportunity to acknowledge the loyalty of 164 long serving colleagues who this year marked 25, 35 and 40 year milestones within the National Health Service.

The family-orientated day included many activities for staff and their children, including a bungee run, bouncy castle, barrel train, fun races and archery.

Celebrating Success Award winners included nurse Sheena Murthick, who was nominated for the Richard Ord Award for Outstanding Contribution from an Individual by her Byland Ward colleague, Tammy Gotts. Sheena is the Link Nurse for dementia care who launched the Butterfly Scheme on Byland. She ensures that all patients living with dementia have personalised care plans while making sure every staff member knows about the person behind the dementia on a case-by-case basis.

Tammy said:

Sheena has dedicated her life and work to the Trust for 35 years. She is passionate in the care of the older adult population and is focused in all areas which contribute towards a better patient experience.

The Governors’ Award for Outstanding Contribution from a Team Award went to Jervaulx Ward who have shown great initiative to improve their response to incidents. Their ‘Safety Huddles’ have seen a 39 per cent reduction in falls while pressure sores in the ward are down 85 per cent as a result.

Meanwhile, the Cardiology team won the Anne Lawson Award for Outstanding Contribution to High Quality Care, receiving recognition for their work establishing an Atrial Fibrillation Clinic. The Youth Communication Team collected the Award for Outstanding Partnership Working for the vital support they provide to vulnerable young people aged 11-25.

The Chairman’s Award for Making a Difference was presented by Sandra Dodson and went to the Pathology department to acknowledge their effort in receiving full accreditation under the United Kingdom Accreditation Services standards detailing the highest possible quality achievable in medical laboratories.

Finally, The Chris Skeels Award for Living the Trust Values went to the Obstetrics and Ultrasound departments for the continued respect, responsibility and passion they show while at work.

Liz Pugh, HR Business Partner and chief organiser of the event said:

It was a fantastic day, celebrating with colleagues and seeing them enjoying the activities with their families who support us to do the jobs we do.
