Harrogate Maternity Unit and York Down Syndrome Support Group worthy causes for Andy’s 10k Bristol blitz

One of the fabulous midwives at Harrogate District Hospital took part in his first 10K, the Great Bristol 10K, raising an amazing £1,200 for two fantastic local causes; Harrogate Hospital and Community Charity – for the Maternity Department, and York Down Syndrome Support Group.

Andy Brown took up the challenge of running the Bristol 10K to raise money and awareness for the two causes: Harrogate Hospital and Community Charity, where Andy has worked as a Midwife for eight years, and The York Down Syndrome Support Group.

Andy’s daughter, Darcey, now aged six, was born with Down Syndrome, and the support that he has received from the group has been invaluable to the whole family throughout her life. He decided it was long overdue for him to give something back.

Andy said:

I wanted to say thank you for the support me and my family have received from York Down Syndrome Support Group, and also to raise valuable funds for both the Maternity Unit, where my colleagues do such an amazing job and the support group that has helped me so much over the past six years. I also ran to try and make my wife and daughter proud, and to try and become a little more worthy of their love!

Andy completed the run in an impressive time of 58 min and 47 seconds. He was delighted to come in under the hour mark and is already planning his next run!

I came in position 5,480, the atmosphere on the day was great, and the weather was sunny and HOT! I’ve already signed up for the next York 10K.

The Community and Events Fundraiser at Harrogate Hospital and Community Charity, David Fisher, said:

It is wonderful when the staff from within Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust get involved with fundraising for the charity, it just goes to show how passionate they are, and the commitment they have for their patients.

Andy really has gone the extra mile to make sure local people who choose to have their baby delivered in Harrogate are able to do so in the best surroundings, and with the best possible equipment.
