Harrogate Grammar School, a lead school in the Network of Teaching Excellence in Computer Science, is one of the first schools to hand out the BBC micro:bit to their year 7 students.

As part of their ‘make it digital’ campaign, the BBC is giving a coding device to every child in year 7 across the UK.

The micro:bit is a pocket-sized, codeable computer with motion detection, a built-in compass and Bluetooth technology, the aim is to inspire young people to get creative with digital and develop a new generation of tech pioneers with core skills in science, technology and engineering.

At the launch event, Daniel Toms, Lead Teacher of Computing and CAS Master Teacher, demonstrated how to program the devices various sensors, buttons and LEDs to create interactive projects and games. From September, Harrogate Grammar School will be introducing a new computer science curriculum in year 8 and the micro:bit will play a key role in the course.
