Matthew Wilkinson, Head Chef at Rudding Park Hotel, Follifoot, is preparing to take part in the Everest Marathon on Sunday, May 29.
Participants in the 26.2 mile race begin their journey with an 11 mile trek through Sherpa villages to the starting point at Everest Base Camp – 5,364m above sea level.
The marathon route then takes the runners through the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas on rough mountain trails, finishing in the village of Namche Bazaar.
Matthew has clocked up hundreds of miles in preparation for the challenge and is now trying to complete more off-road trails as he gears up for the rough mountain terrain. The 32-year-old will also take part in the London Marathon on Sunday, April 24, as part of his training.
Being a keen runner with 10 marathons under my belt, I knew I needed to do something a bit different to get people’s attention. I had seen the Everest race a few years ago and thought this would be a great challenge that people would be willing to support me to do.
I have done some crazy races in the last few years, from road races to obstacle races to 24 hour cross country races but nothing that starts at 5,364m above sea level. The trek to Everest base camp should hopefully get me used to the altitude, but I will only really know how I’ll cope once I arrive and start going up.
I’m looking forward to the whole thing, from the race itself to the views, seeing the mountains and pushing myself to new limits.
Matthew is hoping to raise £1,000 for Yorkshire Cancer Research, which aims to save lives in Yorkshire by funding projects that tackle local cancer problems and priorities.
