Choir picks up trophy at music festival

30 March 2016

A choir specialising in weddings and special events has been awarded a distinction at Harrogate Competitive Festival for Music, Speech and Drama.

The Rock Up and Sing! Events Choir walked away with the Paula Harris Young Singers Cup in the Chamber Choir class at the annual festival.

  • Rock Up and Sing! was founded by professional singer Rhiannon Gayle in 2009. Since then, it has grown to include six different ensembles offering a wide range of performances, from intimate weddings to huge concerts.

The all-female choir performed Caro Emerald’s That Man, and I Dreamed a Dream from Les Miserables, showing their ability to tackle two very different pieces and perform both with equal success.

Choir Director Rhiannon Gayle, who sings as part of the group, said:

The Events Choir members performed fantastically and I was so proud when they were awarded the trophy.

We regularly sing at weddings, parties and corporate events and we know that everyone who hears the Events Choir thinks they add something magical to the day. However, it is wonderful to be recognised by professional judges too, and being given a distinction is really very special for us.

The Events Choir is made up of selected members of Rock Up and Sing!’s 400-strong community choirs. Director Rhiannon, usually seen conducting the larger choirs, particularly enjoys the chance to sing as part of the group.

Last year, they made headlines when they performed at a World Record Wedding held at Rudding Park, with the most bridesmaids and ushers ever involved in one wedding.
