90% of children in North Yorkshire receive their first choice for secondary school

1 March 2016

Nine out of ten parents in North Yorkshire (90.42%) secured their first secondary school preference for their child, higher than last year and continuing the high percentages of recent years.

Over 95 % of all North Yorkshire children have received an offer from one of their top three preferences of secondary school.

Nevertheless, despite these high percentages for preference success, the county council is urging parents to submit their application on time and list as many preferences as possible.

But for some parents who submitted their child’s application late, or failed to list their local school, or did not submit an application at all, this will not be the case.

In areas where there is pressure on places, such as Harrogate, this is particularly important. Four out of the five secondary schools in Harrogate elected to admit above their published admission number.

This is good news for parents and children as it means that more children are offered a place at the school ranked as their highest preference.

County Councillor Arthur Barker, North Yorkshire’s executive member for schools said:

This is good news that once again North Yorkshire County Council, as co-ordinating authority for all maintained schools and academies across the county, has been able to satisfy a high level of parental preference for secondary school places. As a local authority we work with schools across the county to make sure all of them deliver the highest standards of education so that families who are not given first preferences will nevertheless be able to send their children to good schools.

In North Yorkshire all parents have the opportunity to list up to five preferred schools The County Council website provides information for parents to assist them in in completing their application.

Parents have a legal right to appeal if they are unhappy with an assigned place, see http://www.northyorks.gov.uk/article/23543/School-admissions—appeals
