Council gives a helping hand – and free litter bags – to ‘Clean for the Queen’

17 February 2016

A campaign to get a million people out and about cleaning up their communities is being backed by Harrogate Borough Council.

‘Clean for the Queen’ runs from Friday 4 to Sunday 6 March 2016 and aims to give the country a tidy-up ahead of the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations in April.

The event will be the biggest community led clean up the country has ever seen and local residents, schools and community groups who want to organise a clean-up are being encouraged to sign up to the national campaign.

To help with the local clean-ups Harrogate Borough Council is offering advice to event organisers, along with refuse bags and the free loan of a limited number of litter pickers on a first-come, first-served basis.

The council will also collect the filled bags of litter from local events taking place over the Clean for the Queen weekend, providing this is arranged in advance.

People taking part in tidy up events are advised to wear gloves and high visibility waistcoats where appropriate.

The national Clean for the Queen campaign is backed by organisations including the Women’s Institute, the National Trust and the RSPB, as well as businesses including McDonald’s, Costa, Greggs, KFC and Wrigley and anti-litter charities such as Keep Britain Tidy and the Campaign to Protect Rural England.

A number of clean-up events have already been organised for the Harrogate district, co-ordinated by Harrogate in Bloom and Starbeck in Bloom.  They include Springwater School in Starbeck at 10.30am on Friday 4 March where the Mayor of the Borough of Harrogate, Councillor Nigel Simms, will take part in the litter pick.

Other local events include:

Saturday 5 March 2016

  • Pinewoods at 10am, meeting at the Council Nurseries on Nursery Lane East.
  • Hookstone Woods at 10am, meeting at the small layby on Hookstone Wood Road.
  • Sainsburys car park at 10am with Harrogate Rotary.
  • Bilton to Ripley cycle path at 10.30am, meeting at the car park at the end of the cycle path on Bilton Lane.
  • Harrogate Spa Tennis Centre at 12 noon.

Sunday 6 March 2016

  • Woodlands Methodist Church on Wetherby Road at 3pm.

Councillor Michael Harrison, Harrogate Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, Waste Reduction and Recycling, said:

The district repeatedly wins plaudits for the high quality of its streets, flower displays and open spaces but there is always an ongoing battle against those few who spoil these areas by dropping litter.

Clean for the Queen is a great way of reminding people not to litter whilst at the same time bringing people together to make a real difference to the places where they work, live and play.
