A student from Kirkby Overblow has bowled over the selectors to earn herself a second year in the England Rounders U14 squad.

Claudia Stead, a year 9 student at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL), was one of 24 girls named in the national squad, following a selection day of skills training and matches. The squad members train together monthly and are all hoping to make the team when the final selections take place at the end of January.

The U14 team will play a series of matches against the other home nations when the season starts in May, and Claudia is hoping for a second opportunity to experience this high level match play. Last year she initially played in the second U14 team, and later stepped up into the elite squad to win a match against Wales.

Claudia said:

I was really excited to be selected again. Last year I loved how friendly it was and how the team bonded together having come from all over the country. I hope I can do well and continue playing for England – if you get into the U16s you can travel further afield for international matches.

Head of rounders at GSAL Kate Nash said:

This is a great achievement for Claudia and rewards her hard work. Involvement takes much commitment travelling to training sessions and competitions.
