Revised bin collection times for the Harrogate district

14 December 2015

Harrogate district residents are being asked to check that their wheelie bins have been stickered with details of the changes to collections for Christmas, New Year and the 2016 bank holidays.

Since September, more than 65,000 stickers have been distributed across the district by refuse collectors, but the council now wants to check that everyone has received details of the collection changes and to get in touch if they think they have been missed out.

The collections over Christmas and next year’s bank holidays may be slightly ahead as well as behind the usual collection dates so residents are being asked to make a note of the changes to ensure they put their rubbish and recycling out on the correct day.

Customers who are on the weekly sack service should have received a letter with information about their bank holiday collections.

Collections over the festive period and early January period are as follows:

Usual day of collection Revised day of collection

Monday 21 December Saturday 19 December
Tuesday 22 December Monday 21 December
Wednesday 23 December Tuesday 22 December
Thursday 24 December Wednesday 23 December
Friday 25 December Thursday 24 December

Monday 28 December Tuesday 29 December
Tuesday 29 December Wednesday 30 December
Wednesday 30 December Thursday 31 December
Thursday 31 December Monday 4 January
Friday 1 January Tuesday 5 January

Monday 4 January Wednesday 6 January
Tuesday 5 January Thursday 7 January
Wednesday 6 December Friday 8 January
Thursday 7 January Saturday 9 January
Friday 8 January Monday 11 January

Monday 11 January Tuesday 12 January
Tuesday 12 January Wednesday 13 January
Wednesday 13 January Thursday 14 January
Thursday 14 January Friday 15 January
Friday 15 January Saturday 16 January

Normal collections start again on Monday 18 January.

Over the Christmas period, residents are being asked to avoid putting wrapping paper which is made of foil or containing glitter with their kerbside recycling – wrapping paper made of paper is acceptable. In addition, while white or grey card can be collected, brown or corrugated cardboard should not be included in the blue bag kerbside collection scheme.

Councillor Michael Harrison is Harrogate Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Waste Reduction and Recycling. He said:

For operational reasons the council has to revise its waste and recycling collection days.  It’s important that we let residents know of these changes as we appreciate how frustrating it can be for those people who put out their waste and recycling on their usual collection day only to find that it hasn’t been collected.

Putting these stickers on wheelie bins provides residents with a highly visible long term way of keeping up to date with how bank holidays will affect their collections. I would encourage households to check that they have received the sticker showing the collection day changes and to make a note of them so that their waste and recycling can be disposed of effectively.
