“Go DalesBus!” over the festive season

12 December 2015

After the excesses of Christmas and New Year food and drink a day out in the Dales is the perfect cure and by using DalesBus you don’t even need to worry about a hangover! Whilst bus services will not operate on Christmas Day, Boxing Day (except the 36 between Leeds and Harrogate) or New Years Day (though trains will bring in the New Year as usual) the DalesBus Sunday network will operate on Sunday Dec 27th and Bank Holiday Monday Dec 28th with a direct bus 870/874 departing Wakefield (0840), Leeds (0915), Otley (0950) and Ilkley (1012). Explore Bolton Abbey, Burnsall, Grassington, Kilnsey, Kettlewell and Buckden at your leisure or join DalesBus Ramblers for a free guided walk. You can also use DalesBus to walk a section of the popular Dales Way without having to retrace your steps to a parked car. Cravenlink provides a regular service between Skipton and Ilkley throughout the day connecting with trains from Leeds and Bradford which will operate to normal timetables.

For a longer trip including the scenic Settle-Carlisle railway catch the 0900 (Sunday) or 0849 (Monday) train from Leeds (connections from Bradford) and alight at Garsdale for the Little White Bus to Hawes and Wensleydale, where the 856 will run both days between Hawes, Leyburn and Northallerton. The X43/ 972 link from Manchester and Burnley to Skipton and Grassington provides an hourly service during the day (connections from Keighley via the 66A) whilst the Harrogate to Pateley Bridge 24 service has regular connections on the 36 from Leeds and Ripon. On Monday Dec 28th a special 159 service will operate between Ripon, Leyburn and Richmond and Dales & District 29, X34, 54, 55 and 72 will run a normal weekday timetable.

Normal services resume on Saturday Jan 2nd including the X75 Saturday service between Harrogate and Skipton and the York to Skipton service. The 75 will also be running from Skipton to Malham. These buses will run every Saturday until Easter but their survival beyond Easter depends upon their commercial viability as they receive no subsidy. The Western Dales Bus will also run every Saturday in 2016 connecting at Dent Station with the 0849 train from Leeds and giving easy access to Dent Village, Sedbergh and Kendal.

DalesBus services are managed by the Dales & Bowland Community Interest Company which is a not-for-profit voluntary organisation providing essential weekend and Bank Holiday transport for visitors and Dales residents. Further information is available at www.dalesandbowland.com

MetroCard holders and concessionary pass holders travel free on Sunday DalesBus services from West Yorkshire and within the Dales or you can buy a DalesRover from just £9 and take up to two children free with you. Single and return fares are available for shorter trips and no booking is required – just turn up at the bus stop, signal to the driver and “Go DalesBus!” Concessionary Passes are also valid on all Saturday services (and weekdays after 0930) whilst Dales Rambler tickets combine rail travel from Leeds / Bradford with bus travel in Wharfedale (daily) and to Malham on Saturdays. For full details pick up a free Metro Winter DalesBus timetable from your local bus or railway office, library or tourist information centre; go to www.dalesbus.org or call Metroline on 0113 245 7676.
