A time for giving at Brackenfield School

7 December 2015

Around 59 million of the world’s hungriest children do not attend school.

In order to survive, they have to work or beg. Even if they do make it into the classroom, hunger affects their ability to learn.

Mary’s Meals is a charity that provides meals for children who attend school in countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America and The Caribbean. These meals are probably the only nutritional meals the children eat each day.
Brackenfield School pupils have taken part in Mary’s Meals backpack project to give children the essential items they need for school such as pencils, rulers and pens. The pupils brought rucksacks to school to donate to the charity filled them with school essentials.

Head Teacher, Pat Sowa said:

Packing basic items such as pencils really brought home to the pupils here how little some of their counterparts in Africa actually have. Being involved in this project, they realised just how much we take for granted.

The children could really understand what a difference they could make by packing the backpacks.

Principal, Anthony Comerford was delighted that Brackenfield was able to support this worthwhile charity:

Mary’s Meals is one of a number of charities we support at Christmas. In doing this, the children become very aware of the struggle so many children in the world have on a daily basis. They love choosing items to pack and donating the backpacks. Knowing they will go directly to children of a similar age to them makes such a difference to their donation.
