Young biathletes from Harrogate school are crowned Yorkshire champions

20 October 2015

Young biathletes from Harrogate independent prep school Belmont Grosvenor are celebrating after being crowned Yorkshire Schools champions at a major sporting event in York.

A team of youngsters from co-educational Belmont Grosvenor travelled to York University to compete in the Pentathlon GB Yorkshire Regional Biathlon Championships.

The co-educational school, based at Swarcliffe Hall, Birstwith, took 10 children to the competition, which saw youngsters from schools across the county take part.

Boys Finn Wright, Freddie Fothergill, Perry Palmer, Zakari Watson and Robert Kidd along with girls Maisie Lindley, Erin Nattress, Anna Garnett, Sasha Rhodes and Isabelle Barley all travelled to York University to compete in a 50m swim and 800m run.

Biathlon coach Nick Wield said he was extremely proud of all the 10 children who had competed at York.

Nick said:

They have all worked extremely hard and are very dedicated, attending our popular Biathlon club each week. There was some very tough competition but for our school U10 and U11 teams to become champions was a great result.

Belmont Grosvenor School, an ‘outstanding’ prep school set in 20 acres of grounds just three miles from Harrogate, offers a wide range of sports for its pupils, ranging from football, rugby and cricket to netball, hockey and pop lacrosse.

For the past two years, youngsters from the school have qualified for the British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships, held in London at Easter.

The children will discover if they qualify for that event later in the year.
