Dj Trev Harrogate

Harrogate “what’s on” Summer tunes, bikes, Bluetones, Bedraces and banging bands.

30 May 2015

A month or so ago I got my photo taken. I don’t mean like by the paparazzi (which never happens), or surreptitiously by some “lads” whilst I was djing in a night club after they have pointed at my moustache for 17 minutes (which happens every 16 minutes, creating a nice “overlap” experience meaning there is never a minute goes by without some “lads” in their best one shirt and school shoes pointing at me and wondering what the world is comin’ to, murt.) No, I mean I got some portrait photos taken as part of a degree project.

Rainbow Rice already has already got a successfully business taking photos of loads of events and has a facebook page www.facebook.com/rainbowricephotographs with lots of nice content, whilst a full website in on the way; but as the final part of her Degree she chose to specialize in portraits of musicians from the Harrogate area. Quite how I managed to fit into that remit I don’t know; I am quite good at pressing play on other people’s CDs, but the only instrument I can play is a one string banjo. However that is what happened and the photos I have seen so far are superb.

Should you wish to see them they are going to be on display at Harrogate College in B-Block on Tuesday 9th of June as part of the open night. I had a great time doing the shoot and anything that boosts my fragile self esteem these days is a good thing.

To that end, if anyone looks at those photos and thinks “HE is the face of our product”, so long as your product is not Pile Cream (as I prefer an ointment) I am your man, get in touch.

My calendar for summer is actually filling up insanely with offers not entirely disimilar to that. In the not too distant future I will be comparing Bedfest on Bedrace Day, Saturday 13thJune. This is a really good event held at Henshaw’s Arts & Crafts Centre in Bond end in Knaresborough, where I will get to DJ alongside Rory Hoy who is a great telent, so he will hopefully prop me up… Interestingly that day there is also, in Ripley, another really good looking event. Ripley Blues present Oli Brown and his Band, who I am told is an astounding Blue guitarist. So when it comes to summer it isn’t just my diary that should be filling up, there are loads of weekends with plenty of different events on so start planning now!

For example, did you know there is going to be a “Harrogate Bike Bash” on the Stray to celebrate one year on from our excellent showing as part of the Tour De France? Well, there is, and it will feature a closed circuit race round Harrogate which is the first time I can remember anything like that happening here. As well as that there will be an event village with BMX displays, live bands, DJs (possibly me) and probably a Radio Roadshow type stage from our own Stray FM. All that is taking place on the weekend of the 19th, 20th and 21st of June.

Before then, Harrogate sees the return of the excellent Charm night. Returning to Major Tom’s Social after their hugely successful “comeback gig” a couple of months ago, Charm is set to up the stakes, with a night of summer pop, 60s-influenced classic British guitar rock and psychedelia.

Famed for bringing the likes of Gruff Rhys, Julian Cope, and I Like Trains to town in the past, the next night, on Thursday 11th June, will be headlined by The Seagulls. This five-piece wear their influences on their sleeve, such as The Kinks, The Smiths, Arctic Monkeys, Stone Roses, The Jam and My Morning Jacket. If you don’t believe me, you can see a video of them, here bit.ly/1Hk5mbY

Tickets are £4 for this, and the last night Charm ran was really busy and lots of fun… More information can be found at www.theseagullsmusic.co.uk

Less than a week after that, 10 Devonshire Place – which has also started to run regular and successful music nights – returns with another of it’s “masters” type events. Last month they packed the place out (on a Wednesday night!) with Tom Hingley, the original lead singer of The Inspiral Carpets. On Wednesday 17th June they welcome Mark Morrisons , the lead singer of The Bluetones live. That event is free entry but after the last one I can only recommend you turn up as early as you can, as even standing room only was at a premium. I’m really enjoying being involved again with live music there and can’t wait to see the guy from The Bluetones. I have hugely fond memories of getting into their sound via the old evening sessions on radio 1, and Mark will play the hits! I know because I asked specifically for him to play my 3 favorite songs… and the feeling of power was intoxicating – suddenly I understood why people bombard me with requests… though I have no sympathy with them as my musical taste is still better, and I was into everything before it got big.. I really suspect this will be another amazing night. When Tom Hingley played, he put out a great mixture of his more well known songs, his more bluesy solo stuff and even threw in the odd uplifting cover, which was more than I could have asked for. At the end of the day, it’s a free night out on a Wednesday to see a lead singer from a band with real pedigree, so I hope to see you there!

A couple of recommendations for you this weekend from me would be: go and see The Superlatives tonight at Henshaws in Knaresborough as they are a great band, and also MAKE SURE YOU ACTUALLY go and see The Superlatives tonight at Henshaws in Knaresborough, as I wasn’t joking, they are fantastic!

Cheers for reading, and here’s the listings for this week – and beyond – have fun, drink good stuff in a good way and don’t be loose with your affections. Trev x x x
