29 May 2015

Harrogate Town AFC has welcomed midfielder Paul Thirlwell to the team.

Paul, 36, has recently spent just over 8 seasons at Carlisle United where he made over 220 appearances, scoring 7 goals. Before that he has also played for Sunderland, Swindon Town, Sheffield United and Derby County. He has also had the honour of representing England at u21 level in 2001.

Whilst at Carlisle, Paul famously scored in the final match of the 2008-2009 season. It was a game that United had to win against Milwall to avoid relegation to League 2, thanks to Paul’s goal, they won 2-0 and survived.

Paul has also had a stint as player-manager at the Cumbrian club during 2014, but was released at the end of the last campaign.

Speaking about Paul’s arrival at the club, manager Simon Weaver said: Paul will give us a really good, experienced option in the middle of the park. He’s a top professional whose enthusiasm and organisation will definitely rub off on players around him. Paul lives locally too which fits well with us and we are delighted that he’s now become a Town player.
