Patrick McLoughlin, Secretary of State for Transport with Andrew Jones MP

Transport department role for MP Jones

15 May 2015

Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Andrew Jones has accepted an appointment at the Department for Transport in David Cameron’s new Government .

The Prime Minister invited Mr Jones to join the Transport team as the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the department.

Mr Jones commented following his appointment: We all know that transport is one of the most significant factors supporting economic growth.  Ensuring that people are able to move from place to place easily and that goods can get from manufacturers to customers, both here and abroad as exports, is one of the basics of business.   Transport is also an important factor in the quality of our daily lives.  We must never forget that people use our trains, roads and public transport for shopping, getting the kids to school and a multitude of everyday tasks.

Over the next few days the portfolio responsibilities will be clarified.  After that I look forward to playing my part in the Department for Transport to ensure that the hard won growth we are seeing in our economy is sustained and improved.

Mr Jones has previously worked as a Parliamentary Private Secretary in the Department and has also held a number of transport-related appointments such as Vice Chair of the Rail in the North All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) and the Chair of the Northern Electrification Taskforce.

Andrew is the first MP for our area to hold a Ministerial post in government since James Ramsden was Minister for the Armed Forces in 1964.
