Housing tenants in Harrogate district invited to house swap event

11 May 2015

Harrogate Borough Council will be holding a Home Swap event on Wednesday 20 May for council and social housing tenants who are either looking to down size or are keen to have more space.

As the government’s welfare reforms, including the spare room subsidy, continue to have an impact on those in receipt of housing benefit, some social housing tenants are seeking ways to find properties which are more appropriate for their requirements. Home swapping schemes offer tenants the opportunity to engage with other tenants who are keen to exchange their homes, giving them greater control over where they live.

The drop-in ‘speed dating’ style event will take place at the Jennyfield Styan Community Centre, Grantley Drive, Harrogate, between 1.00pm and 4.00pm on Wednesday 20 May 2015, and will provide tenants with the chance to actively engage with others who are interested in swapping their homes and view properties available for exchange.

Also in attendance will be representatives from Harrogate Borough Council’s Housing and Housing Benefits teams, Housing Associations and the Citizens Advice Bureau, who will be able to offer advice and answer questions on house swapping and promoting homes for exchange.

The event will provide the opportunity for tenants to join Harrogate Borough Council’s transfer waiting list and register with www.homeswapper.co.uk, the national home swap and housing exchange service for social housing tenants.

A kid’s entertainment corner and refreshments will be available on the day, while tenants who are able to exchange their property before the 1 November 2015 will be entered into a prize draw have the chance to win £100 of shopping vouchers.

To confirm your attendance for the event or for more information, tenants should contact Holly Judd, Housing Officer on 01423 500 600 ext 58488 or email holly.judd@harrogate.gov.uk
