The new pub that I’ve been on about, Ten Devonshire Place, finally opens this weekend. Superbly for me, I have managed to blag myself a night working there, doing a “Very Quaint Vintage Quiz” on Sundays. I’ve only really gotten as far as a good name for it but I’m quite sure I’ll be able to throw something together for Sunday… the good news is that I will be working with my close personal showbiz friend Jonny Skinner, who will be playing live music in between the rounds. In fact, now I think about it, one of the rounds WILL BE a music round where you have to tell me the original artist of the numbers that Jonny plays… yeah that’ll eat up half an hour won’t it? The warm up for the quiz will start at half 8 with actual questions from 9, and it’ll be done by 11pm sharp. Saturday is the official opening of the pub, though there are a few preview nights before as they get the staff trained up to speck. One of the things the owners have been keen to point out to me is that this will be a very “organic” pub, meaning not only will it not involve weird pesticides, but also that it will evolve according to what the regulars are looking for. The opening is just stage one and there is loads of scope to move upstairs into the other floors, whilst there is already a flash on site off licence that will be doing not only fancy hard to find bottled beers but also “Growlers” which is a way to get hand pulled beer at home. Now, when it comes to these “growlers” this is the first pub anywhere round here that offers this, and it’s a bit of a weird thing…. I’ve seen it being done and it is like watching the flux capacitator working in Back to the Future, in that I have no idea what is going on but I suspend my disbelief for a moment and just trust to the fact that it is some pretty clever shizzle. Certainly this is an interesting time, with on the one hand lots of pubs still closing, there are a certain kind of pub on the grow, and they are the ones who are innovating and bringing more to that table that just a place to get under the table. I’m looking forward to seeing what Ten Dev has to offer (That’s right, “ten dev”, I called a place that’s not even open yet by a nickname. Ten Dev, you heard it here first).
More in the town centre, there are quite a few interestingly different nights on this weekend. On Saturday The Den has a Latin Party. I cannot, in truth, pretend that I particularly like Latin music, but I do like women who shake their bottoms and that is what generally happens when Latin music is playing, so it’s swings and roundabouts really. Ula who is running the night is excellent fun, one of the most enthusiastic people I know, and her parties are something cool and different, with lots of crazy dancing, carrying on and bottoms.
Before then on Friday the Geek Pub Quiz returns to Retro Bar on Commercial Street. This is also a night involving lots of bottoms as it is really all about arriving early and getting “bums on seats”. A very busy quiz night run by very cool people, totally worth checking out.
STILL remaining focussed on bums, The Regency Pub has a Burlesque Night on Saturday. Maisie Martini runs her night there and this one is a “graduation party”. I think, I’m not sure, but I think she has been training people up in the noble art of Burlesque. If you’ve never been to one of these nights they are a right good laugh, funny and just on the right side of saucy. This column is rapidly becoming a bit focussed on bottoms, but hey – why not get your ass there?
Proper Rockin’ comes to the Blues Bar on Sunday with Straight Shooter playing live. I’ve seen this band and they are thoroughly decent, banging out hard rock standards all night long. Unfortunately Mike out of the band said he would send me a paragraph of lunacy for this column, like he did last time they played, and he hasn’t. Last time he wrote some proper mental stuff and really I can’t compete with that, so Ima just move on. Go see them though, they am good. Also at the Blues this Saturday one of the resident bands there, the Sharon Colgan band indeed, are playing the Saturday slot. This is a changed to regular programmes as I guess Jed Thomas is having another one of his holidays. He has more holidays than me, that man. Probably because he doesn’t find it quite so hard to get someone to agree to go away with him as I do – silly really, I’m great fun and always get along really well with people until I turn into a drunk arse.
Before I go, I’ve also got to quickly mention the Harrogate Grumbler Christmas party again, as they have sent me a logo for the charity it is supporting, and whenever people send me stuff I like to include it basically because it makes my job easier. Their party is on Friday 19th December, and if you wish to see the facebook event for it you can by pointing your thing at this and clicking it : https://www.facebook.com/events/1503610223242707/
