Local MP, Andrew Jones, is hosting a public event to highlight the latest development in Alzheimers research.
The event is organized by Alzheimer’s Research UK and is to provide an opportunity for the public to learn more about dementia and the research taking place in the UK to defeat the condition. According to Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC), Harrogate Clinical Commission Group’s area is one of the top 10 in the UK for the highest levels of recorded prevalence of dementia in 2013/14.
Alongside Mr Jones will be:
- Dr Christopher Morris – Senior Lecturer, Institute of Neuroscience and the Institute for Ageing and Health , Newcastle University
- Professor Stuart Pickering-Brown – Professor of Neurogenetics, University of Manchester
- Katy Schneider – Policy and Public Affairs Advisor, Alzheimer’s Research UK
Harrogate’s Holiday Inn recently hosted the launch of the Harrogate dementia-friendly campaign and has also offered to host this public event free of charge.
Mr Jones commented: Research is of critical importance in combating dementia. Many believe that dementia is a side-effect of getting older. It isn’t – it is a brain disease and, at the moment, it is incurable. That is why research is absolutely crucial.
This update will show the public what developments we expect to see over the coming years.
I hope the event will be well-attended. Nearly half the population know someone suffering from some form of dementia. That is why, alongside research, we need to ensure we are all aware of dementia.
The campaign to become a dementia-friendly town is a good way of ensuring the issue is higher up the local agenda and the needs of dementia sufferers and their families and friends are addressed.
The public meeting on dementia research is on 25 September 2014 from 2pm to 4pm at the Holiday Inn, Kings Road, Harrogate, HG1 1XX
