Young disabled people rewarded for completing courses to help them into employment

13 August 2014

Young disabled men and women have been honoured by a Harrogate charity for successfully passing courses to help them into paid employment.

The seven learners, who all attend Disability Action Yorkshire’s training centre on Hornbeam Park, were presented with certificates recognising the various stages they have reached over the last few months.

Whilst all successfully passed a short course in personalisation, three of the cohort, Kirsty Walker, Imogen Dickinson and David Kennett, were also awarded ASDAN (Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network) accredited Entry Level 3 Certificates in Employability Skills, with Imogen also attaining a Level 1 Community Volunteering qualification.

In order to gain the Employability Skills qualification learners have to undertake work experience to help give them a real insight into the world of work.

Imogen, 21, has already gained full-time paid employment thanks to a combination of hands-on-experience and her qualifications.

Disability Action Yorkshire Trustee Val Davies, who presented the certificates, said: It is extremely difficult for people of any age with a disability to be offered paid employment, be it full or part time.

At Disability Action Yorkshire one of our underlying aims is to help our learners gain vocational qualifications that give them the skills – and the confidence – to apply for work.

These seven have worked very hard and it was my pleasure to present them with their certificates recognizing the progress they have made.
