Summer makeover signals start of new era at Rossett Sports Centre

13 August 2014

Just weeks after the keys were handed over, Rossett Sports Centre in Harrogate is undergoing an impressive makeover thanks to its new operators.

Rossett School took over the management of the popular centre on 23 July 2014 and has been working with contractors to improve the facilities in time for the new school term – and to welcome back the public from September.

The sports centre will feel more modern and welcoming, and the school is looking forward to developing a new programme over the coming months.

Headteacher Pat Hunter said: This is such an exciting development for the school.
I am really impressed with the transformation in the changing facilities and they aren’t even completed yet.

It will be fantastic to be able to open the doors in September and show people what we have done.

The sports centre itself will remain closed for the rest of August while the work continues, although the 3G pitches are still available for hire and have been busy throughout the summer. Harrogate Borough Council was unable to hand over all the details of previous centre users because of data protection laws, but sports centre staff have been working hard to establish contact with them and organise the many booking requests.

A new assistant centre manager has been appointed, who will work alongside experienced staff from the school to develop an interim programme for September and October while new staff are recruited and long-term plans are put in place.

Malcolm Howe, head of adult education, said: It has been a lot of hard work over the first few weeks, but we’re very keen to make sure nobody is overlooked and as many people as possible are able to keep using the sports centre.

Our long-term aim is to meet as many community needs as possible, offering a wide range of options to people from across the Harrogate area any beyond. We’re keen to support wider sporting initiatives, as well as to tie the sports centre in with the school curriculum and other activities, including adult education, and strengthening links with primary schools.
