Sunny outlook for expanding furniture manufacturer

9 July 2014

Yorkshire furniture and interiors specialist Dovetailors has become the latest business to relocate to the converted Sunny Bank Mills complex in Farsley.

The company, which designs and makes bespoke commissions for private and commercial clients, said the move would facilitate plans to expand its manufacturing operations and branch out into retail.

David Wilson, who founded Dovetailors with his wife Emmanuelle in 2003, said the new unit offered larger workshop space than the firm’s previous premises in Blubberhouses, North Yorkshire, along with a dedicated retail area.

David Wilson said: The workshop is already fully up and running and busy with existing orders and we plan to open a new design store alongside it in the autumn selling our own range of smaller furniture items and home accessories.

The company works closely with British piano specialist Yorkshire Pianos making components for its Cavendish range. It also recently completed a collaborative project with Wakefield Cathedral to design and build a new altar and ambo as part of a major renovation of the interior of the building.

David Wilson said: Demand for our commercial furniture service has increased significantly over the past two years and this has been accompanied by strong growth in our work for private clients with projects including bespoke kitchens, bedrooms and one-off pieces of made-to-measure furniture.
We work extensively throughout Yorkshire but also nationally so Sunny Bank Mills is ideally placed for us between Leeds and Bradford and close to the motorway network.

He said the decision to launch a dedicated retail space has been inspired by a trend for smaller design-led items for the home such as chairs, side tables, knife blocks, bowls and storage boxes.

David Wilson said: Design has always been at the heart of everything we do and we are looking forward to developing our retail range alongside our manufacturing activity. We are also hoping to expand our collaborative work with other businesses that have a need for our design expertise or CNC technology for their own projects.
