Harrogate Borough Council – one day industrial action

4 July 2014

Harrogate Borough Council has been advised of a national one day strike being held on Thursday 10 July 2014 against the national pay award for the financial year 2014/15.

The industrial action has been instigated by UNISON, GMB/MPO and Unite trade unions. Should Harrogate Borough Council staff participate in the industrial action, it may lead to a reduced service or, in some cases, cancellation of a service or the closure of a venue. The situation is far from clear, but the council will do all it can to ensure that the most critical services continue.
Although it is not yet known how many staff will take industrial action, the council can confirm the following:

  • Refuse and recycling services may be affected. Some residents with a Thursday collection may miss a collection that week and this may also impact on further dates.
  •  Main switchboard maybe closed or a limited telephone service maybe available.
  • A number of office buildings (including benefit payments) may be closed to the general public.
  • No further cremations or burials will take place on council property on Thursday 10th July.
  • Warden services may also be disrupted.
  • Leisure facilities will open if the staffing numbers meet the minimum required to open. But this won’t be known till the day itself.

Wallace Sampson, Harrogate Borough Council’s Chief Executive said: The council has tried to minimise as far as possible the disruption to residents and businesses caused by the national industrial action on Thursday 10th July. However, the industrial action may result in the council having to provide a reduced service, or close a facility.

Residents are reminded that the council operates services online and they are advised to visit the council’s website www.harrogate.gov.uk for further details.
