Dirty Stops Out – Dj Trev’s guide to avoiding elimination in the early stages of a night out

26 June 2014

If you want my body, and you think I’m sexy, this Friday Harrogate Town’s 1919 Club are hosting a “Hot Rod” Rod Stewart tribute. If however you DON’T want my body and you DON’T think I’m sexy, please just stop replying to my messages on facebook as it’s just confusing.

If you are in Knaresborough on Friday there is a really good line up at the monthly event “The Fridays night Mix”, at Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre. Headlined by the Superlatives, a truly superb Indie Rock band with the swagger of The Arctic Monkeys and the attitude of Oasis (musically they pitch in somewhere in between with a helping hand and dancefloor nudge from the Stone Roses), Nathan Hitchinson is supporting (an artist about whom I know little, but Rufus the organizer of these nights told me he’s great and that’s good enough for me, as Rufus is kind of a bespectacled Jesusesque musical Svengali who always runs a good show) and also playing that night is Jonny Skinner, who I have been holding a candle for for some time. He’s a great musician and a thoroughly handsome man toboot. All proceeds go towards Henshaws and they have a fully licensed bar and everything.

In Harrogate on Friday meanwhile there are a few things on that are not on every week, for example the Regency Pub is having it’s monthly discount Improv night, and Retro Bar is welcoming back it’s House and disco night, but I’ll talk about it in my house and disco section as that makes more sense.

On Saturday night The Guardians are releasing their new EP. Most people will know of these guys as some of them used to be in a band called Kasiuss. This is held at a secret venue, and tickets are ten quid. Since it’s at a secret venue, it seems pointless me telling you any more about it. Apart from the fact that it’s at Viper Rooms. Which makes total sense, because that venue supports live music so much…

Also on Saturday, the Manhatten Club has a Burlesque Blitz “Swing to Victory” party. This looks like a pretty cool take on the currently massive Burlesque scene and is a vintage dance event and followed by a 40’s inspired burlesque late show with some great performers. Everyone who goes to these events always tells me they are superb and if I wasn’t working so hard (stood in the corner of a room pressing play on a CD player, up 30 times in one night!) I’d go to this. For tickets see www.justaddtickets.co.uk . I rather suspect this is part of some kind of 1940’s themed weekend of events that is going on, as on Sunday there is a 1940’s day at the Valley Gardens. This looks pretty cool too, with Swing Bands and a Spitfire flypast, plus vintage singers ( I think this means vocalists, rather than old sewing machines, but you never know), memorabilia and a marching band and what have you. If summer lasts that long, this will be a cool day out. There are things on from 11am and it is based around the Pavillion area but there are all kinds of parades about the gardens too.

I talked this up last week, and loads of shows are sold out already – let’s face it, almost certainly down to my personal endorsement – but Sprite Productions begin their summer run at Ripley Castle this week. They always do a Shakesperian production and every time I have been they have been really superb events. This year it’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and as I said last week I can’t recommend these events enough. The setting is perfect for a balmy summer evening of superb acting and alfresco what ever you like; take a picnic and make a night of it!

Deep House watch
Here’s an advance warning: On Friday the 1st of August, Knee Deep, one of the towns cooler Deep House nights have what they are classing “big one” with Dale Howard & Buckley. Their nights are very cool and hugely popular, so I will trust the man and take their word for it, here is a link to the facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/552772121509682. If you can’t wait for that to get some House music inside of you, this Friday Retro Bar hosts PlayTime featuring Luv Jam. This is a house and disco night and is run by Bri Buckle who is a top lad and has been doing these kind of nights in town for a while and a minute; he’s really passionate about the music and does it for the right reasons (unlike someone like, say, me, who does it for the dirty dirty money… which I am confidently expecting to turn up any time now).
Literary ting

The Old Peculiar Crime Writing Festival (which is in itself part of the Harrogate International Festival) is coming to town for the 17th to the 20th of July. Here are some of the main highlights, plus something that seemed like a good idea when I agreed to it some time ago, possibly whilst drunkened by strong liquors.
J.K. Rowling in conversation, on writing as Robert Galbraith at The Royal Hall. (Tickets SOLD OUT, sorry, I shouldn’t have mentioned it);
Lynda LaPlante book signing and in conversation at a prestigious mystery town center venue (probably, if the Guardians EP launch is anything to go by, at The Viper rooms, because they always support the written word so much. Next week, Joey Essex is it?)…. (Please note, that is NOT at The Viper Rooms, I’m being petty);
Peter May, author of the “Lewis” series, in conversation with Anne of Cleves, presumably talking about her time as one of wives of Henry VIII. (Tickets £12);
Best selling author Mark Billingham doing a crime quiz; DCI Banks’ star actor Stephen Tompkinson in conversation with author Peter Robinson at the St. Georgre Hotel.(Tickets £15)
….. and me, Dj Trev (plus his Holmes) sitting Oxfam Bookstore Window dressed as Doctor Watson, reading books and looking at the evidence against him. (Strangely, this is a non-ticket free event).

If you have any listings you can message me on facebook, though please allow me time to reply as I will have to wade through the tones of messages from hot single girls asking me to leave them alone. This is also a good way to get in touch if you want to cunningly trick me into doing something bizarre for charity, such as sitting in a shop window for 3 days dressed as Dr. Watson. I’m not really sure HOW that is going to raise money for charity, perhaps there will be some stocks and you can pelt me with rotten fruit; frankly that would be an improvement on the majority of feedback I get for my output, still, I’m told with certainty that I will get free Latte’s all day, so that’s really all I care about. You know, that and charity, obviously.
If, for some reason, you want to come and see me do some DJing this week (it will sound slightly better than me sitting in silence in a shop window) my top recommendation would be coming to see me on Saturday on the top floor at rehab and “hilariously” asking me for Rihanna, as it is only a matter of time before I snap and just play “Umberella” in-between Slipknot and Skrillex.
Oh right… before I give you the listings, a couple of my muso mates who I trust implicitly with recommendations (though not with my chastity) have told me that the band playing this Thursday at The Blues Bar are sensational. I can’t go because of commitments to unsuccessful quiz nights I have made, but I will give it a thumbs up, and suggest you go in my stead. Blues has had some great guest ales on recently too, so you can’t go wrong. Here are the listings in full:
