Special viewing area for people with disabilities for the Tour de France

10 June 2014

Special arrangements are being made for people with disabilities to watch the Tour de France in Harrogate on Saturday, 5 July 2014.

Harrogate Borough Council has designated a prime position at the top of Parliament Street within sight of the stage one finish line on West Park.

The grassed area in front of the war memorial has 100 spaces available – 50 for people with disabilities and 50 so they can be accompanied by a carer, family member or friend. The council has also arranged for the temporary siting of wheelchair accessible portable toilets next to this location.

John McGivern, the council’s Tour de France Event Planner, said: The Tour de France is probably the biggest sporting event to take place in the UK this year. We wanted to make sure that everyone, regardless of ability, gets an opportunity to enjoy this sporting spectacular. This area in Harrogate couldn’t be a better site for viewing the race and especially the sprint finish.

Booking is essential and is subject to certain criteria.
Tickets are available for Saturday, 5 July. Entry is free of charge but by pre-booked ticket only and they will be allocated on a ‘first come, first served basis’.
Those requesting spaces will need to prove eligibility by providing documentation stating their entitlement to disability living allowance (or its equivalent) with the higher mobility component.
The spectator area will be open from 08:00. You must be in place prior to the arrival of the pre-race festival procession at 14:30. If you are not in place by then, your space may be allocated to others.
These spaces are outside so please dress appropriately.
