Join over 1,600 North Yorkshire residents to shape policing and community safety

9 June 2014

North Yorkshire residents have until this Sunday to take part in a major consultation that will shape the future of policing and community safety across the county.

Over 1,600 people have so far taken part in ‘The Big Police Debate’, which was launched by North Yorkshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Julia Mulligan two weeks ago. But Mrs Mulligan is urging more people to take part.

The Big Police Debate opens the doors for people who live in North Yorkshire to have their say on where they think North Yorkshire Police should be focussing their activities and investment. The results of the survey will be analysed and the key themes that emerge will inform the Police and Crime Plan: a strategic plan that sets out the direction for policing and community safety in the country.

Julia Mulligan said she’s been encouraged by the responses so far but that she wants more people to have their say so that so that she can better understand their needs.

Julia said: I’m pleased that the majority of people who have already taken part say that they feel safe in their homes and communities.

But 38% have also told me that they are worried about people dealing or using drugs in their neighbourhoods, 37% highlighted motoring offences and 35% raised anti-social behaviour.

People being drunk or rowdy in public places was the fourth-highest concern across the county.

Whether you agree or disagree with these early findings, I would strongly urge you to make sure your voice is heard by taking part in The Big Police Debate by Sunday.

You will help me better understand your needs and those of people local to you and help determine what North Yorkshire Police and its partners do differently in future.

Members of the public can complete a five-minute online survey or find out about other ways of having their say by visiting www.bigpolicedebate.co.uk, by following the Police and Crime Commissioner’s office on Twitter on @northyorkspcc using #BigPoliceDebate or emailing their views to info@bigpolicedebate.co.uk

Julia Mulligan will be hosting a webchat between 7 and 8pm on Tuesday 10 June on the topic of supporting victims of crime. A further webchat will take place between 7 and 8pm on Thursday 12 June on the topic of Protecting Vulnerable People.
