A charity fundraiser has been inspired to take on two extreme sporting challenges in as many months after three members of her family were diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.
Caroline Garnham, secretary to the partners at Harrogate accountancy firm Saffery Champness, has just completed the 5K Colour Me Rad course at Harewood, which sees competitors running to escape an arsenal of coloured paint bombs and mortars.
She also took part in April’s 16K Yorkshire Warrior event, successfully making it through rivers, bogs and underground tunnels to the finish.
Caroline has already raised more than £500 for Parkinson’s UK, a charity that is very close to her heart.
Caroline said: Three members of my family, including my Dad, have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s so I have a very special reason for setting myself these challenges.
Sadly my grandmother passed away several years ago after developing the disease.
Taking part was a personal hurdle for Caroline as well, after overcoming ill health herself. She prepared for both events with help from B-Physical Fitness in Harrogate.
I used to run regularly but the last event I took part in before the Yorkshire Warrior was the Abbey Dash in 2007.
It feels fantastic to have regained my fitness levels, completed the challenges I set myself and raised so much money in the process.
Caroline’s next challenges, which will be in aid of Kettlesing Felliscliffe Primary School, will be the Wetherby 10K and the Major Series in Bramham.
