Final stage of roadworks on Leeds road under way

23 April 2014

The final stage of the roadworks on the A61 Leeds Road in Harrogate gets under way as resurfacing begins on Thursday (24 April 2014).

The £1 million Leeds Road/Hookstone Road junction works have been carried out as part of the planning conditions for a new retail development and have been co-ordinated with highways works planned ahead of July’s Grand Depart of the Tour de France in Harrogate.

The start of the resurfacing works have been delayed by two days to enable Northern Gas Networks to carry out works which have no connection with the development to avoid the newly-laid carriageway being dug up.

Resurfacing is expected to be completed by Friday 9 May 2014.

The resurfacing work will require complete closure of the junction at times during the evenings and alternative routes will be signposted.

The site’s development managers, St James Securities, and contractors GMI Construction Group and HACS, have worked closely with the County Council’s Highways Department to find a way to carry out the necessary works as quickly and safely as possible.

St James Securities Construction Director Dan Murray said: We apologise to everybody who has been affected by the roadworks. This has been a tremendously complex upgrading programme, with a number of uncharted utilities and unforeseen issues.

The contractors and the utility companies have worked with the county council to provide an improved junction.
