RHS Harlow Carr support Pinewoods Conservation Group on Harrogate Community Project.

Planting has started at Irongate field as part of the Pinewoods Conservation Group (PCG) project to turn the area into a community green space. Wednesday 16 April 2014 saw the project get officially underway as part of RHS National Gardening Week with RHS Harlow Carr nominating this project as one they wanted to support.

Joining RHS staff was members of the PCG along with students from Horticap and Harrogate District Biodiversity Action Group.
The day saw large amounts of turf removed with planting of 100s of new flowers and a marsh area being created.

Paul Cook, Curator at RHS Harlow Carr said: We are delighted that RHS staff volunteered to support the Pinewoods Conservation Group to develop the Irongate field into a green community space. As part of National Garden Week we were looking to support a local project and this one was right on our doorstep. We are sure the final result will be a credit to all those involved and develop into an area alive with wildlife.

Neil Hind, Chair of PCG added: It was great to see so many groups and people come together to help with the digging and planting. The area is already unrecognisable from when we started and will continue to develop.

More planting will be carried out during the next few months with a path and picnic benches being added. An official opening is being planned for July 2014 with a teddy bears picnic.
