Dj Trev’s guide to guzzling, puzzling, chancing and dancing

10 April 2014

The definitive guide to what’s on in Harrogate.

If you want to, for some reason, read some other stuff that I write, you can follow me on the facebook.com/djtrev as – for example – this past month or so I have been writing a weekly review of my Battle of the Bands.

I’m not sure my reviews are particularly any good, but given that whenever I say something nice about a band, that band then says something nice about me, I feel fully validated in my output. The Battle of the Bands has reached the semi-final stage with this Sundays second semi final featuring Pips, Hell Fire Jack, The Shades & Meth Candy competing to give us the last two acts to make up the 4 bands playing on Easter Sunday. It’s been going really well and the standard is very high (the standard of the bands I mean; I dj in-between and after the bands, and the standard of that is reassuringly low). In the interests of balance and journalistic integrity it is worth pointing out there are other options available to you on a Sunday night; for example, Viper Room’s Nightclub runs a night called Peek-a-Boo and this week it is a “70’s Special”. This actually looks quite fun too, however the facebook event page DOES say for “the young, rich and restless” which made me do a bit of sick in my mouth.

This Saturday the newly refurbed (is that a word? I think I am looking for the term refurbished, yes, my spell check prefers that) Retro Bar on Commercial Street has Selby Green starting a residency there. Retro is a cool different little place, and they are putting on a bunch of stuff there at the moment so this looks decent. I’ve still not been in since the refurb (refurbishment?) but it’s on my list.

Another small cool joint is Zoso Bar, which this Saturday had Moombah step duo Karpacheta, who are having a CD Launch Party. I’ve had Karpacheta on one of my nights before and its interesting stuff, like dance music only not like dance music.

Before then, on Thursdays, a chap I know called Faried is running a regular night of live music at the Regency pub. This has his band, who are called M.O.A.B., plus Pink Flloyd tribute band Beyond Reproach and also Ula, who I recently had at the acoustic battle of the bands impressing people with her offbeat acoustic quirkness. It kicks off at 8 pm and 10.30pm they move into acoustic territory. The Regency often has a lot of things on there so if you’ve not been down for a while maybe its time to check it out?

Into the future, Burlesque Without Borders is back at the Manhattan Club on 26th April. They only do two of these events a year and they are always very popular. Now, I love a bit of sauce, but when it comes to my writing style I always tend to be a bit crude rather than a bit clever, or indeed clever at all, which is not ideal when talking about Burlesque nights. Bearing that in mind, and also taking into accound my workshy nature, I thought I would ask my mate Bev Curtis to write a bit about it, so I can just put my hands back down my pants for a bit and sit back and enjoy the ride:

Bevvers sezzers: “Come and see THE best Burlesque show in Yorkshire and help raise funds for Doctors Without Borders and the Alzheimer’s Society. Gracing the stage at BWB 7 there is burlesque dancing from a bevy of beauties :Eliza Beau – to tempt you into deep waters; Poppy Pout – pucker up and get ready to pop; Snow de la Flake – she’ll melt your heart; Hazarah – her shimmies will leave you breathless; SirMidnight Blues – a most provocative gentleman; The Honey B’s – a whole troupe of troublesome temptresses; Lily la Belle feat. Andy Dennis – you’ll need therapy after this one. Adam Sheridan is our favorite man of mystery performing mind blowing magic on the evening, plus there is live music from The Leeds City Stompers – A vintage acoustic duo playing jazz, blues, ragtime, boogie and swing from the 1920s, 30s & 40s. Our wonderful maid, the saucy Lady Viola, the BWB raffle and Mr la Belle’s tombola all add to the madness that is held together by the lovely Snappy O’Shea, our sassy, sexy and ever so silly compère! A full night’s entertainment costs a mere £7 and tickets are on sale at www.WeGotTickets.com – but don’t leave it too late – they sell out fast!!”

There is actually another charity burlesque night coming up – man them chicks love getting their kit off for worthy causes don’t they? (if there are any burlesque artists reading, yesterday I put a pound on a Macmillan board at Heaven Coffee shop as I waited for one of their amazing hot chocolates, so you would be artistically justified in giving me a personal performance) – anyway, the Macmillan cancer support ball takes place on the19th April at The Harrogate Pavilions. This includes a meal, burlesque artists, and it a black and white dress up theme. But I don’t know how much it is to get in or anything, as I am no longer allowed within 250 yards of any burlesque performance, following a misunderstanding.

This Friday, Christies Bar has got Nadeem Leigh from TV’s “The Voice” live there, and they have the MG Band there next Friday, so it looks like there will be plenty of live music back in town on Fridays, given that The Den also do live music on Fridays too. Unfortunately The Den often forgets to message me with who is playing, but if I were to have to guess I would say this week it’s “Dave’s band of general awesome” Or they might be on on Saturday afternoon. I just don’t know… I like both Christies and The Den and would unhesitatingly recommend you visit both. The Den does great food too, I’m not sure if Christies still does food, perhaps if they wanted to invite me (plus one, ideally, easily impressed girl) down for a complimentary 10 pints I could find out. Actually, anywhere can feel free to do that, as weirdly putting on underground rock nights is not bringing in the kind of cash heavy yield I though it would whilst failing at my “fundamentals of good business sense” course all them years back.

Even though I have been writing this over a year, I still find out about regular nights as I go along, so if your event isn’t listed let me know. For example, you’ll see that on Mondays I now know about not 1, not 2 but 3 (T.H.R.E.E.) pub quizzes that take place, and whilst that’s impressive in itself, it also means I can shoehorn in a reference to the fact that there are 2 (T.W.O.) pub quizzes on Thursday, one at Christies and a less good much quieter one that I run at Lure Bar. My pub quizzes is actually a bit rude, but remember any offence caused is purely.

Finally, in the listings section, I am going to start featuring home games from Harrogate town. I’ve been a few times and it’s a good laugh and is a cheaper option than going and watching either of the other teams I support from the comfort of my armchair (Liverpool & York), but who are doing well at the moment, which I suspect is due to the fact that I’ve not been to see either in 4 months.. I also want to list Harrogate Railway’s fixtures but I’m buggered if I can find them. I only live up the road and COULD walk down there and see if they are up, but my aforementioned armchair is comfortable and my bum is tired from the aforementioned forfeit activity. I actually think I play football against some of the railway players at footballmundial.com on Wednesdays, but I daredent talk to them as they are like athletic people who can actually play football, whilst I am an old fat lad in some trakkies that my mates let go in goal as that’s where I can do least damage. Anyway, I want to start listing those kind of things. To be honest, I want to really start listing pretty mush ANYTHING that is going on in Harrogate and the provinces, as A) I think it would be nice to have everything in one place, and 2) the more listings I have, the less words I need to write in this preamble to reach my contracted there that is 2000 words please find invoice attached
