Salon North returns to Harrogate

1 April 2014

Harrogate International Festival’s Salon North returns for 2014.

Hosted in Harrogate’s historic Masonic Hall on 24 April 2014, the event consists of a night of stimulating ideas in art, science and psychology designed to change your life for the better.

The format consists of three speakers, each given 30 minutes to engage the audience with their subject.

Helen Bagnall, co-founder of Salon, said: It’s basically massive ideas in intimate spaces. We created it because it was the kind of night we wanted to go to. We had done over 50 Salons in London, and it was a huge success so we were looking for the right partner to take it out of London, so we were delighted when Harrogate International Festivals decided to develop something with us together back in 2012.

The first Salon of 2014 revolves around the theme ‘Cool Hunters’.

Zoe Cormier (pictured), the author and creator of performance group ‘Guerilla Science’, explores how science has moved from geek to chic. Trevor Cox, Professor of Acoustic Engineering, puts on the coolest concert showing audiences how to listen deeper to the world’s music from singing sand-dunes to the sound of our planet six miles from the surface in his sonic odyssey, and behavioural economist Nick Southgate answers the difficult question ‘what is cool?’ He will help the Salon crowd pinpoint the coolest moments in their own, and the world’s history, and show you how to be even more hip.

Helen said: It’s a two hour period, you come along, get a drink, then each speaker has half an hour. At the end of the evening, you will have heard information you’ve never heard before, perhaps on a subject you didn’t know you were interested in. You’ll also have acquired a new skill and go home with ideas you really want to Google to find out more. It’s a way of engaging with new subjects in an entertaining, fun way. You can come and have a glass of wine, relax and really enjoy it, but you’ll go away having learnt something new.

Following ‘Cool Hunting’ the next Salon event will be hosted at the Raworths Harrogate Literature Festival at the St George Hotel on Friday 11 July 2014. Its subject is ‘Personal Taste’, encompassing food, books and music featuring philosopher Julian Baggini, founder of ‘Bibliotherapy’ Ella Berthoud and renowned author and musician, Daniel Rachel.
