27 new police officers ready for life on the North Yorkshire beat

31 March 2014

27 new police officers are ready for action across North Yorkshire following a passing out ceremony held at police headquarters last week. Another 28 are waiting in the wings to follow them.

The new officers have successfully completed an intensive 17-week, initial training course which includes law, personal safety, search techniques, public order, first aid and a local community placement, all designed to prepare them for life on the beat.

The officers also undertook a considerable amount of home study as part the course to qualify for the Certificate of Knowledge in Policing.

Another 28 new trainee constables were also welcomed to North Yorkshire Police on the morning of Monday 31 March 2014 to begin their initial training course.

The passing out ceremony was hosted by Chief Constable Dave Jones on Friday 28 March 2014.

Chief Constable Dave Jones said: It gives me great pleasure to welcome these exemplary new officers to the service with their infectious pride, enthusiasm and desire to serve the public. They have joined a very dedicated, professional and high performing workforce at North Yorkshire Police and can look forward to an exciting, challenging and rewarding career with the police service.

I hope the passing out of these 27 officers and the recruitment of another 28 trainees, sends a reassuring message to our communities that myself and the Police and Crime Commissioner are committed to protecting front line policing.

Julia Mulligan, Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire added: Before I came into office, the former Police Authority had determined to reduce the number of police officers serving in North Yorkshire Police to reduce costs.

When I consulted over the Police and Crime Plan, the message that came across loudest and clearest is that North Yorkshire’s public wants bobbies on the beat to keep communities safe. That was one reason why, shortly after coming into office, I and the Chief Constable reversed the Police Authority’s decision and North Yorkshire Police is now increasing its officer numbers as other forces are shrinking theirs.

I am delighted to be able to welcome the new officers into their role. They have embarked upon an exciting and rewarding career and will play a critical part in meeting our aim of becoming the most responsive police service in the country.

Mick Boothroyd from North Yorkshire Police’s Human Resources and Training Department, added: We have thoroughly enjoyed working with the new recruits and have taken great pleasure in watching each officer develop in confidence, knowledge and competence. We wish them the best of luck in their new career with North Yorkshire Police.

The 27 new recruits will now start work on the beat under the guidance of their tutor constables for 15 weeks.

After that, they will be able to patrol alone, but will be monitored and assessed during the rest of their probationary period. After two years they will be certified as fully fledged police officers.
