Dj Trev’s guide to what’s on in Harrogate

13 March 2014

The Column that get’s harder to write every week. That’s the level of humor I am now operating at after having written this for a year. If anyone could do something in Harrogate that I could playfully but respectfully poke fun at, whilst subtly promoting my own product, that would make my life much easier.

This Thursday, “My Party”, which is a sort of Dancey/pop/R’n’B and “urban” night at Viper rooms is running a t-shirt give away. They have got 250 T-Shirts to give away. I can’t tell you anymore details. That is because I didn’t want to click “attending” on facebook to find out more, as I can’t go cos I am busy doing an unsuccessful Quiz night at Lure Bar. Now: my unsuccessful quiz night is also giving stuff away, so you need to decide whether you’d rather go to Vipers where they are giving away T-Shirts, or come to my quiz where I am giving away a few badges I’ve got left over and some home cooked biscuits. I didn’t even make them myself, I got the only person who comes to the quiz week in week out, Bev, to make them for me. It’s that kind of dedication and delegation that has kept me at the top of this game for, let’s face it, too long now. Anyway, my quiz starts at 8pm and costs a pound, or entry to Vipers is £3 if you get something called a “Pre-Ticket” which in my day we used to call a “Ticket”.

This Friday you can meet boxing Legend Frank Bruno at the Manhatten Club. Now I don’t know, but I suspect like all people Frank finds hearing the same things over and over again from morbidly un-amusing people utterly hilarious; so why not go up to him and say “know what I mean ‘arry”. He’ll love it and almost certainly won’t punch you into next Tuesday. If you don’t fancy doing that, why not come and see me, say, Saturday night at The Den and ask for some “Rihanna, next mate” I’ll love it and almost certainly won’t see you next Tuesday.

Next Tuesday there is the Electro Jam night at Zoso. I went to this the other week and it was really good, it runs every week and anyone can dj, so long as they can, you know, Dj. That said, I think I am going to play a wacky Gabber set there over the next few weeks, and I can’t even mix or do any of that modern stuff, like, you know, play music people like and so on. Go down and register at the start of the night to find out what it’s about. honestly it’s pretty cool.

Next week there is a band called Straightshooter playing not one but TWO gig’s in Harrogate. They sent me a Bio, which is a great idea, as the only thing that I like more than writing, is being able to skive off and let someone else do it for me. So here is a bit of info on them. After which I will tell you the gigs they are doing, which, unsurprisingly given the column inches I am giving them, one of is for me :)

Formed in 1998 in the North East by ex NWOBM band RAVEN’s drummer Mike Kenworthy they band play an eclectic mix of southern rock classic rock and new metal. The band was put on hiatus after their last major gig headlining at Newcastle City Hall. This was due to Mike moving to Harrogate. The band reformed in the autumn of 2013 with a new line up: On Vocals is Jon who has years of experience as an excellent guitarist but changed to lead vocal as he realised a mic weighs less than a 4 x 12 cab. On Guitar and backing vocals is Danny Gibbins (often to be found playing barefoot) an experienced player whose aggressive style and stunning solos bring a real vitality to the band. Mike Kenworthy is on drums, one of pioneers of NWOBHM and thrash metal but now combines that power and energy with a sense of groove developed over the years to produce a unique style that locks in with his daughter Keira’s bass playing. Keira is a student at Leeds college of music and has skill and technical ability beyond her years. A recent bio quoted ‘With a perfect combination of sassiness and talent, this bass playing bombshell will have you on the edge of your seat with her groove oriented licks and solid sound which compliments her dad’s powerhouse drumming. So don’t be fooled by her radiance, this chick is the female Leon Wilkeson (hats included).’ Last but by no means least is guitarist Jack Davison who’s maturity of playing added to his youthful energy completes what is a high power and musically skilled band. The Bio closes by saying Straightshooter do “Southern Boogie on Steroids with a few surprises”. Let’s face it that sounds pretty good! So, you can see these guys at their Harrogate debut next Friday 21st March at The Den, and they are also playing my Battle of the Bands on Sunday 23rd. That’s what we musical types call a busy weekend, but I only have to press play on a CD and stand there whilst people in bands actually deserve the applause.

Conveniently I managed to speak about the Battle of the Bands, which is currently ongoing at Rehab. 2 heat’s in and they have been really good, this Sunday is an acoustic heat with 5 (F.I.V.E) acts, and it kicks off at 8pm. Before that, around tea time a band called Oscilantern are playing at the Blues Bar. I really really rate these guys so would totally recommend that gig to you. I am a bit under the weather so can’t think of a clever way to put this, but really, Oscilantern are just brilliant, so just go and see them. Here are all the listings of what is on, if you’ve got any submissions for this please write them on a bit of paper and wrap it round a box of multivitamins and echinacea and throw it at me when you see me.

The exact same bit of SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION I used last week, as, let’s face it, you’ve stopped reading already.

Should you wish to listen to some of my actual Dj’ing from the comfort of your own home, you can do that at Mixcloud.com/djtrevuk but really I’d much rather you can out and partied, not for my financial gain you understand, but for your emotional wellbeing.

Thanks for reading, drink responsibly and don’t be loose with your affections.
