Cancer Research UK supporters fly the flag on Commonwealth Day

11 March 2014

Two Bupa managers, Chris Lawrence and Neil Jones, both 41, were chosen by Cancer Research UK to climb Scafell Pike in Cumbria, to mark Commonwealth Day (10 March 2014).

Chris and Neil, both from Harrogate in North Yorkshire, formed part of a 16-strong team of Cancer Research UK supporters and cancer survivors who climbed all 978 metres of Scafell Pike, England’s highest peak, to fly the flag in a celebration of Commonwealth Day.

Cancer Research UK was invited by Buckingham Palace as one of four charities selected to fly the Commonwealth flag at the peaks of the four highest mountains in the UK. The two Bupa managers were chosen as a thank-you for their commitment and fundraising efforts to the charity.

As part of their fundraising efforts, last summer Neil and Chris completed Run2London, running almost 220 miles from their office in Leeds to Bupa’s London office – the equivalent of seven marathons in seven days – raising over £43,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Neil Jones said: Cancer Research UK is a charity close to our hearts.

We are delighted to have been asked to take part in this once in a lifetime opportunity to mark Commonwealth Day and raise further awareness of the Cancer Research UK.

Head of Volunteer Fundraising at Cancer Research UK, Simon O’Leary said: Our supporters are incredibly important to us and we saw this as real opportunity to say thank you to them and involve them in something historic.
