Health & Safety forum triumph at the Alan Butler Awards

2 March 2014

The Harrogate & District Health & Safety Forum has received national recognition for their excellence and achievements in helping to make workplaces safer and healthier.

At the recent Alan Butler Awards, an event which was organised by the Safety Groups UK, supported by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents [RoSPA], and held at the House of Lords, the Forum scoop the top accolade of Overall Winner, as well as receiving a coveted Gold Award.

Judges were impressed with how the group had developed a practical partnership with Harrogate Borough Council’s Economic Development Unit in order to reach more local companies.

At the Forum event on Wednesday 26th February, the Mayor of the Borough of Harrogate (Cllr Michael Newby) presented members of the management team with their awards.

The Harrogate & District Health & Safety Forum was established in 2006 and acts as an advice and communication network for those interested in workplace health and safety, and promotes good practice in this field by running free health and safety events.

The forum, which now has over 500 members, brings together representatives from local businesses in the Harrogate district, Health and Safety Enforcement Officers, and the Health and Safety Executive. Each year, Forum members are invited to attend three free events and receive a newsletter every two months.

The Safety Groups UK network is made up of around 70 local groups, each of which consist of health and safety professionals who give up their free time to promote, share information and offer practical help to employers in their communities in a bid to prevent accidents and ill health at work.

Factors taken into consideration by judges included the group’s programme of events and seminars; member recruitment and retention; communication with businesses; and how it supported key themes in the overall health and safety strategy led by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

Steve Pepper from the Harrogate & District Health & Safety Forum’s Management team was delighted that the Forum’s hard work and dedication had once again been recognised, having previously won an Alan Butler Silver Award in 2011 and 2012.

Steve Pepper said: It is a wonderful achievement not only to be named Overall Winner, but also to receive an Alan Butler Gold Award.

Our aim is to promote good practice by running free Health & Safety events. These events are a good way to network with other like-minded businesses, find out how to deal with common health and safety issues and to keep up-to-date with changes in legislation. It is a real honour to have our efforts recognized by such an illustrious national body as Safety Groups UK.
