County council to carry out drainage works at Kex Gill on A59

20 February 2014

North Yorkshire County Council is planning some further improvement works to the A59 on the hillside slope above Kex Gill.

The works, which will cost around £200,000, are part of a monitoring programme for maintaining the stability of the slope at Kex Gill and the prevention of landslips. Monitoring has revealed the need for additional drainage measures, supplementary to the major work that was completed at Kex Gill in 2011.

This stretch of road runs across very high ground between even higher moorland and has in the past been affected by landslips in bad weather. In 2011 the county council undertook to strengthen the banks and resurface part of the road during a five week road closure.

However, unprecedented levels of rainfall in the last two years have led to the authority keeping a close watch of the area and a review of the previous works.

The works are planned to start on Monday 24 February 2014 and expected to last for approximately six weeks. They will be carried out using temporary lights to maintain traffic flow on the A59 at all times with a 40 mph speed limit applied throughout the extent of the works.

County Councillor Gareth Dadd, North Yorkshire’s Executive Member for Highways said: We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause to road users; however, the works are necessary to enhance the stability of the slope at Kex Gill.
