Dirty Stops Out – Dj Trev’s guide to Getting Fab in Feb

6 February 2014

It’s a very exciting week for me as there are some cool things happening that I really want to talk about. Whilst there’s usually one or two things, this week there are things I’m really enthused about, so I shouldn’t really have to ramble on as much as usual. This means there will less things written about Giraffe’s and methods of self entertainment that I employ, and more about what’s on in Harrogate, which is kind of the point of this column.

Tiffanies Cafe in Starbeck (or, as we who live in Starbeck prefer “St. Are in-the-Beck” – but HEY please don’t call it that if you come from town it’s OUR thing. Also please don’t tell me that “You don’t live in Starbeck you live in high Harrogate”, because that is not true, I am not high because winners don’t do drugs. And I am an WINNER cos this week I won the footballmundial.com Wednesday league Cup, somehow playing in goal for a team I don’t even play for – THAT’S how good I am) FOCUS I’m clearly getting side tracked, which is what normally happens but this week there’s things I ACTUALLY want you to go to!

To start again, Tiffanies in St. Are in-the-Beck has an Acoustic & Tapas afternoon with Yo Preston, from 3pm – 7pm. I would advise booking for this cos it’s not a massive place, but I don’t know you might be ok to just turn up. I’m still in bed by that time to be honest. It’s somewhat tiring being a successful 6-a-side player, ill informed journalist AND a failed Dj you see.

I actually am actually getting up and doing something on Sunday, because the Blues Bar has one of the few artists who can justifiably be called a Harrogate Legend; Jason Feddy plays there in the Afternoon! It’s been ages since I’ve seen him but his old Sunday sessions were classic! I’m listening to the album he recorded there right now, and it still sounds great. For those of you making a session of it, the appropriately names teatime band are Skinny Living. After that the Bar Steward Sons of Val Doonican play at night in what is, once again, a really great all day line up at the legendary Blues.

Also on Sunday, the Pitcher & Piano, has an evening of live music from Kat Eaton. Last time she played there I mentioned that she was really fit, but since she didn’t respond in kind by “liking” my profile pic on facebook, I feel a bit socially awkward now, so I’ll let you make up your own mind, please go down on Sunday (it’s free entry, plus the sell Vedette, which is top 3 for me) and leave a comment on my facebook wall saying either “yes, she is fit” or “Trev, please stop stalking attractive singersong-writers through social networks”.

Before then, kicking off the weekend Lure Bar welcomes a brand new night to the House Scene in town: “Discotek” has a swathe of quality house & tec-house Dj’s playing, from 8pm til 2.30am and entry is FREE! perhaps if you’ve looked at some of the similar nights that have been doing so well in town recently, but not been sure about paying for the tickets or whatever, you might want to check this out. Certainly the caliber of the DJ’s is high and I think this should be really good.

Next week the Curzon in Ripon has The Geek Pub quiz, which is a massively successful quiz that runs monthly in Harrogate, and next week it goes on tour to Ripon. I’m not sure if Ripon is within my mandate. If it’s not, don’t worry, cos next Friday The Geek Pub Quiz is back in Harrogate, at Retro Bar.

On top of that lot, there are at least two new venues in town that have opened in the last month or so – what do you mean you haven’t read this column for 3 weeks because it makes you want to hurt your self? – but I have talked at length about them so will cut to the quick: Major tom’s social on the ginnel opposite-ish Lure and near Montey’s looks like a pretty cool hipster joint that I’ve yet to be able to go to, but I have heard very great things about, and I know the guys that own it already have a good place in Leeds that I love. Meanwhile at the top or town by the train station is The Harrogate Taps which is a nice traditional train station pub with a great range of craft beers, guest ales and more. Let’s not forget we already have some great places in Harrogate, so get out the door and live the dream!

SHAMELESS SELF PROMOTION

Mixcloud.com/djtrevuk is where I put up the occasional mix or even “radio style” show. There is a new one (well, new to me, it’s a week old now) and it’s almost certainly the best Classical Music show presented in a hip-hop style you’ll hear this week.

I post ill-advised matters of personal opinion on facebook.com/djtrevuk and that has lots of swearing on it. Actually so does my mixcloud thing. Plus I even managed to squeeze in a cheeky swear in a news piece for Harrogate-news the other week, if that’s your thing!

I Dj Thursdays at Lure bar, running my quiz from 8pm, Fridays I’m in Leeds Electric Press Revolution, this Saturday I’m back at The Den and on Sunday’s I’m at rehab, playing great tracks in the wrong order.

Thanks for reading, drink responsibly and don’t be loose with your affections.
