14 January 2014

Two Thirsk primary school pupils have been presented with awards by North Yorkshire Police for designing winning posters in a road safety competition.

Four local primary schools took part in the competition which was part of Road Safety Week held in November 2013.

Ella Stimson, 7, from Thirsk Community Primary School was the overall winner and was presented with a T-shirt and £10 Tesco voucher.

10-year-old Blaney Wardhaugh won the Thirsk Community Primary School award and was presented with a T-shirt and £5 Tesco voucher.

The winners were announced at afternoon assembly on Monday 13 January 2014, by local Police Community Support Officer Nigel Warby and Assistant Chief Constable Paul Kennedy.

ACC Kennedy said: It was great to attend the school and present the winners in person. I was asked to judge the competition and was very impressed with the standard of entries. We have some very talented youngsters in the area and Ella and Blaney are very worthy winners.

Road safety is an extremely important issue and raising awareness and getting children involved at an early age is vital to help children stay safe.

The competition was organised by PCSO Nigel Warby and prizes were donated by Tesco, White Rose Books, Towlers and Boots.

The participating schools were Thirsk Community Primary School, Sowerby Community Primary School, All Saints Roman Catholic Primary School and Knayton Church of England Primary School.
