First of all Happy New year. Second of all, I must apologise for the fact that there was no guide last week.
I feel pretty bad about letting you all down. Almost as bad as I feel about the fact that no one noticed. Still, we’re back together again now aren’t we, so lets put the past behind us.
The reason for there being no guide last week is a fairly generic Dj’s “New years eve was pretty mental and I was still recovering” which I know is the kind of rubbish you can read from any bog-standard dj on facebook (facebook.com/djtrevuk) but I WAS caught slightly under prepared by new years eve: Having started at 10pm I’d got nicely tipsy and was winding the night up at 6 o’clock, which was my contracted booking, when Colin, one of the bar staff who looks like Aslan out of the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, came over and told me we were open until 8am.
What the? So I had to try and sober up and remember how to dj for a further 2 hours. Given that I’m not really sure how to dj at the best of times, coupled with the fact that I’d played pretty much everything I was planning on playing in the 8 hours I’d already been on, it’s safe to say the last two hours were not a “showcase of brilliance”, more a “tour de farce”. Now, I realise that people with proper jobs are going “wow, you had to do and eight hour shift that turned into a ten hour shift, poor baby, did you strain your “play” button finger?” but please try to bear in mind that when you are doing your 12 hour shifts you DO usually get chance to go to the toilet…. I mean, you know, for a PROPER visit.
A sit down visit is what I’m talking about.
My body was nicely getting ready to lose half a stone at 6am, suddenly I had to keep it all pinched ‘til 8 – PLUS come up with 2 hours worth of music that wouldn’t sound terrible.
I managed one of them things.
No matter, it really was a mental night so many thanks to everyone who came, whilst I’m on, thanks to anyone who came to any of my gigs last year, I have successfully fended off having to sell my blood for another year. Though when that point does inevitably arrive I’m pretty sure I’ll be instantly rich as I have such a high midiclorian count.
Ramblings aside it is the new year so Boom let’s get back to reality and talk about what’s on:
As you’d expect, things slow down slightly in January, but there is still plenty to do. Personally, in Harrogate I’ve got my Sunday social requesty-type set at Rehab each week and tonight I’m running my weekly pub quiz (that is going remarkably well thankyou, despite my best efforts) on Thursdays at Lure. Thursday night’s have actually had a few changes recently, as far as I’m aware your Dj Pieman is now running Rehab’s R’n’B night, which will be… er, I don’t really know what to say about that to be honest… the other club night in town is Viper Rooms’ “My Party” R’n’B night, which tonight claims to be a student farewell party, and again, I have little of worth to say about that…. apart from to wish the hardworking students all the best back at uni, and to say I hope they hurry back as I will miss their wearing of shoes without socks and stupid haircuts as when the students are gone there’s only really me and Dj Pieman in this town now who have haircuts that push the boundaries of good taste. And let’s face it, my hair is seriously starting to operate under a policy of “whilst stocks last”.
I did say things slow down a bit in January, but Hardcore places like the Blues bar don’t even slow down slightly, still running 7 nights a week of live music, for the name alone check out Wild Wind in the afternoon this Sunday, as I think we can all admit to being a bit gusty after a big Sunday lunch. At tea time they have “Lithium” playing who, hopefully will be a Nirvana tribute act, but honestly I’ve not checked my facts on that as checking fact’s is for who don’t take the term “amateur journalist” seriously.
Also in the live environment this Sunday The Pitcher & Piano have the amazing Dan Burnette there this week, who is great value as an entertainer, plus I know I had a really good pint of something last time I was in there, but I can’t remember what it was… Which means that you can legitimately try every single beer in there in the interests of SCIENTIFIC discovery.
Another place I’ve had a great beer in recently was Montey’s which has started selling Piston Head beer – about the coolest looking beer ever and also tastes great! They have started doing some interesting sounding things like “Smokey Bacon Old Fashioned” which I suspect is a rum type affair, plus a fantastically healthy sounding “hot buttered rum” but I didn’t have chance to sample all of their fine ware’s as there are only so many hours of the next day that I can spend in bed with the covers over my head. It’s pretty much guaranteed there will be a good crowd of party people in there any night of the week, PLUS if they still have their spiced winter warmer cider on give that a go as it really takes the edge off any of the following: Cold Winter Nights; Chilly January Gales; Bitter Rain or sleet; Irritating drunk friends of your girlfriend.
There is a charity night on this Saturday at the Manhattan Club, which is running an “Elvis Hits” for Yorkshire Cancer research night. Les Loax and Memphis have previously won the UK’s “Top Elvis Tribute” contest and are supported by The Sharon Colgan band and McEnrow & the ball Boys, providing the music, for what will no doubt be another cracking evening at the Beech Avenue venue that always puts on a great range of events.
Quickly back to the Pitcher & Piano, their Wednesday night Quiz returns from a brief break this week from 8pm. Sticking with Quizzes, whilst Retro Bar is currently closed as they do something (I’m not sure what) I am assured (it was a pinky promise so it must count) that it would be open again in time for the Geek Pub Quiz that returns there on Friday 17th one would imagine to continue being the town’s busiest quiz night.
Hales Bar has just done out it’s “snug” room. I’ve not had chance to go in and see what it is, I think they might be doing food in there, but frankly if you think you need an excuse to go to Hales then you’ve obviously never been in, as it remains a brilliant pub always with a good crowd plus regular entertainment, such as the acoustic night every Sunday with the excellent Ade Payne & Matt -Ghost-town-soldier.
I want to mention the Coach & Horses, as since my bird started working there I’ve been in hanging around at the end of the bar whilst she’s “just 5 minutes” for hours recently; it has to be said this has several wonderful advantages: Firstly they do an excellent pint of Daleside blonde, but – if such a thing was possibly – even better than that is the bar snacks they have. There’s a massive range and all the proceeds from them go to Martin house children’s hospice, which is a lovely thing for them to do isn’t it? Every Tuesday they also have Pie & Peas night similarly with proceeds going to Martin’s house, whilst I’ve yet to have their Pie n’ Peas (due to the fact I am fighting the middle aged spread thing and losing) I think it’s worth mentioning as they run this all year and have raised loads for charity so good on ‘em.
Finally, I should remind you of some of the monthly nights that keep going in January, such as Knee Deep at Moko Lounge, which returns on the 31st following a massive 2013 for them. Pub wise fun quiz night’s like Tim Paul’s “Big Video Thing” (a pub quiz presented in futuristic full colour on a big screen with noises and stuff), returns at the crack of February, on Saturday 1st at The Empress. The Empress also does a great pint of Daleside Blonde, however I’m starting to feel that I’ve mentioned Daleside blonde too much in this column this week, particularly given that I’m STILL waiting for my free pint of said ambrosia of the gods from my new house mate’s dad, I’m starting to think it’s never going to happen. A bit like I’m starting to think said housemate is never going to empty the sink… Which reminds, me, like a traditional house wife I’ve ignored the washing up for 3 hours thinking “well, I’m not doing it” and now I’m at the stage of “who am I kidding” so I’ll go and do that and leave you with this weeks listings:
