MP calls time on nuisance PPI calls

6 January 2014

Local MP, Andrew Jones, has highlighted the need to clamp down on rogue Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) companies.

Mr Jones raised the issue with the Minister for Justice on the floor of the House of Commons after meeting a number of constituents suffering a seemingly never-ending stream of nuisance calls.

Mr Jones asked Shailesh Vara MP, the Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Justice: What steps is he taking to tackle rogue payment protection insurance claim companies and nuisance calling by those companies?

In his response the Minister said that more resources were being made available to the claims management regulator to crack down on bad practices and that such rogue companies will soon be subject to fines for breaching a tough new set of rules due to be introduced this year.

Andrew JonesCommenting Andrew said: PPI calls can be a proper nuisance particularly when they happen again and again, day after day. Many constituents have raised the issue with me and I too have been subject to this annoyance. One company which called told me even though I did not have any PPI I may still be able to claim! There couldn’t be any clearer evidence of the system being abused

The Minister told me that between January and November 2013, the total number of authorised claims management companies decreased by 718; the total number of personal injury claims management companies fell by 917; and the total number of PPI claims management companies fell by 85.
