Harrogate Hospital Radio short-listed for three national awards

6 January 2014

Harrogate Hospital Radio has started 2014 in style by being nominated for a clutch of national broadcasting awards.

The radio station, which has been on air since October 1977, has been shortlisted in three categories in this year’s Hospital Broadcasting Association awards.

Ian Wighton, Harrogate Hospital Radio’s chairman, is in the running for the title of Best Male Presenter, whilst Ellie Jackson, who won the Best Female Presenter award in 2012, is hoping to regain her title when the winners are named in March.

In addition, Harrogate Hospital Radio is one of ten hospital radio stations from across the country to be shortlisted in the all important Station of the Year category.

Mr Wighton, who has presented a regular show on the radio station for the last 36 years, said:  We are delighted to have been recognised for the quality of the shows we broadcast within Harrogate District Hospital.

I’m thrilled to have been shortlisted in the Best Male Presenter category and for Ellie, once again we are keeping our fingers crossed for her.

Ellie, from Pateley Bridge, won Best Newcomer Silver award in 2008, Best Female Presenter two years ago, and was commended in the category in 2009, 2010 and 2013.

Mr Wighton added: The Station of the Year title is one that has escaped our clutches a number of times, but we hope we have done enough over the last 12 months to finally be awarded it.

We have fantastic broadcasting facilities and a superb membership made up entirely of volunteers. I’m very proud to be chairman of this organisation and it would be magnificent to be chairman of the hospital radio station of the year.

The National Hospital Radio Awards will be held on Saturday, March 29, during a gala dinner at the HBA Annual Conference, being held in Bristol Marriott Hotel City Centre.

The awards are judged by professionals working in the radio and health service industries.
