The bus stops here

20 December 2013

Campaigners hail stop and shelter victory.

A long-running campaign for a bus shelter on York Place opposite Christ Church has ended in success.

The campaign, led by residents of Church Square Mansions and supported by High Harrogate Councillor Richard Cooper and MP Andrew Jones began two years ago.

The York Place stop was previously perched on a muddy banking with no shelter for travellers. In wet weather local residents had trouble getting to the stop and frequently took a bus in the opposite direction to catch a bus back to avoid the muddy and slippery wait at the York Place stop.

Now all that has changed. North Yorkshire County Council applied to the government to use cash from the Sustainable Transport Fund to install a smart new shelter and a proper surface at the stop.

And residents couldn’t be happier.

Mr and Mrs Williamson of Church Square Mansions, who collected a petition with over 100 names, commented:

It’s been a long time coming but the new shelter is just the ticket. Many who use the stop are not so steady on their feet these days and don’t drive.

We need that extra bit of help to enable us to use public transport and that’s why our new shelter is so welcome.

Local MP Andrew Jones commented:

I want to thank the County Council for pulling out all the stops to get funding for this new shelter.

As we approach the worst months of winter this will enable people to get out and about that bit more easily.

Councillor Cooper added:

Normally you wait at a bus stop. We’ve been waiting for a bus stop. Just a few years ago there wasn’t even a bus stop for residents in Church Square Mansions. Now we have a modern, safe stop and shelter.
