School recycling competition launched

22 November 2013

Primary school children are the focus of a new competition designed to reinforce the importance of recycling in the Harrogate district.

Harrogate Borough Council, in partnership with Yorwaste, has launched a recycling-related drawing competition for local schools.

The winner will receive a mini i-Pad and their artwork will go on the side of a refuse vehicle in the area.

The competition has been organised to coincide with a contract Yorwaste has with Harrogate Borough Council to process and sell recyclable material – cans, paper, glass, plastic bottles card/cereal boxes – collected from kerbsides as part of the council’s improved recycling service.

Over the past 18 months residents have recycled 13,385 (figure as of September 2013) tonnes of waste.

Every primary school in Harrogate is being invited to enter the competition, which will run from 1st December 2013 to 28th February 2014. Using the template provided to schools, all children need to do is draw and colour a picture related to recycling and the environment. Examples could include a newspaper with a recycling message as the headline or a self portrait of a child, or their parent, recycling in the home.

A judging panel will then consider all returned entries and the winner will personally receive a mini i-Pad and their winning entry will be put on a recycling vehicle in the area. The winning child’s school will also receive a bag of recycling-related resources.

Councillor Phil Ireland, Harrogate Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment, said:

We are hoping to have a high number of entries for this competition. Children can often teach parents, especially on something as important as protecting the planet.

It is those very children whose futures we, as responsible homeowners, are able to protect. I am pleased to note that since we introduced the new recycling service our recycling rate has increased to over 40% (an increase of over 5% on the 2012/13 level) but we want to get that figure even higher and need the children to help us spread the message that recycling is better for the environment.

Yorwaste Managing Director Steve Grieve said:

We are delighted to support a competition that we hope the children will find lots of fun, but which will also help to reinforce the message about the importance of recycling on the environment.

All schools will this week (w/c 25th November) be sent an email with all the details of the competition, including the drawing template and terms and conditions. Any school that has not received an email can either email schoolcompetition@yorwaste.co.uk or download the information from www.yorwaste.co.uk/the-waste-place/school-resources/
