Young people at Coppice Valley Primary School will tread the boards at Harrogate Theatre thanks to a drama project funded by a local law firm.

Kirbys Solicitors of Harrogate has paid for the school on Knapping Hill to work with the theatre’s education department for 10 weeks as part of its commitment to supporting youngsters in the local community in the run up to its 250th anniversary in 2015.

Alison Gray, partner and family law specialist at Kirbys Solicitors, said:

Harrogate Theatre’s education department prides itself on developing learning through creativity.

One of the ways they achieve this is through the delivery of after school clubs in local primary schools giving youngsters the opportunity to perform to their friends and family on the Harrogate stage at the end of the project.

The programme allows young people to build their confidence and creativity and aims to instill a lifelong love of theatre and performance.

Kirbys Solicitors of Harrogate is delighted to be involved with such an inspiring initiative and we can’t wait to see the children perform at the end of the project in December.

The 20 youngsters taking part in the initiative are studying American writer, poet and cartoonist Dr Seuss most widely known for his children’s picture books characterized by imaginative characters, rhyme, and frequent use of anapestic meter.

CoppiceTheir end of term performance will be inspired by two of Seuss’ most famous children’s books – If I Ran The Zoo and The Sneetches.

Harrogate Theatre Education Workshop Leader, Hannah Draper, said:

We’re really pleased to be working in Coppice Valley Primary School this term.

The school has a keen interest in drama thanks to the school’s secretary Liz Lancaster and it’s great that Kirbys Solicitors of Harrogate are supporting our work in Coppice to enable pupils to build confidence, teamwork and communication skills whilst having fun.

I’m really looking forward to welcoming the Coppice drama club to Harrogate Theatre for their performance in the Studio at the end of term. It will be something very special.

Coppice Valley Primary School secretary, Liz Lancaster added:

We are thrilled that our children are having the opportunity to work with Harrogate Theatre and we can see that they are benefiting greatly from the experience.
