Double award for Harrogate charity

15 October 2013

A North Yorkshire charity has been recognised for its work by being honoured with two awards in just two weeks.

Disability Action Yorkshire (DAY), which is based in Harrogate and runs a care home, training centre and second-hand furniture enterprise, has been named Social Enterprise of the Year by Social Enterprise Yorkshire & Humber.

In addition, it now comes with a royal seal of approval after receiving the Duke of York Community Award, which is presented to community projects that have passed a rigorous selection process.

The Social Enterprise of the Year award celebrates organisations that exist to address social needs, reinvesting profits in its social mission. It recognises the social enterprise which has achieved the greatest impact and has demonstrated excellence in all aspects of enterprise.

DAY Chief Executive Jackie Snape said:

It is fantastic to have been recognised with two awards in only two weeks!

We are exceptionally proud to have received the Social Enterprise of the Year award for Yorkshire and Humber.

This recognises the work that we have done to live up to our social mission and provide a service that gives disabled people independence and a purpose.

Receiving the Duke of York Community Award was a fabulous way to round off two wonderful weeks. We could not have won either had it not been for our fantastic staff, super customers, service users and clients.

DAY, which last year celebrated its 75th anniversary, creates opportunities for disabled people to live the lifestyle of their choosing through creating opportunities.

In July, the organisation moved its Home Care team from a first floor office in Thirsk into a new, accessible building, at 23 Chapel Street.

From here, the 30-strong team of home care assistants carry out a wide range of duties and services to people living in their homes in Thirsk, Northallerton, Bedale, Richmond, Easingwold and Ripon.
