Fatal motorcycle collision on the A170 near Sutton Bank

29 September 2013

North Yorkshire Police is appealing for witnesses and information about a fatal motorcycle collision near Sutton Bank in the Thirsk area at about 5.45pm on Sunday 29 September 2013.

The man riding the Ducati sport bike, who is aged in his mid-50s and from Beverley, East Yorkshire, was travelling towards Sutton Bank from Thirsk on the A170 when the collision occurred at Sutton-under-Whitestonecliffe.

It is believed the rider was overtaking a line of other vehicles when he collided with a blue Vauxhall Astra car that was turning right into the Bagby junction.

The rider was sadly pronounced dead at the scene despite the best efforts of police officers and paramedics to save him. While we are not in a position to formally identify the man at this stage, family members are being supported by officers as enquiries continue.

The man driving the Astra escaped uninjured but was left shocked by the incident.

Highways officials put in place local diversions while police collision investigators analysed the scene and to allow the two vehicles to be recovered.

The stretch of road re-opened at 11.10pm.

Witnesses to the collision or anyone who recalls seeing a man on a Ducati motorcycle heading from Thirsk towards Sutton Bank at around teatime on Sunday, are urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2, and ask for Julian Pearson.
