Thirsk charity benefit from waterproof windfall

4 September 2013

Thirsk-based charity North Yorkshire Youth is set to benefit from an unusual donation – unwanted walking gear!

The charity, which provides learning and development opportunities for 8-25yr olds, including activities at Carlton Lodge Outdoor Centre, has been selected as charity of the month by the recycling organisation Gift Your Gear.

For the month of September, Gift Your Gear has partnered with Rohan, the award-winning outdoor and travel clothing company, to collect unwanted outdoor clothing and equipment of all brands through Rohan stores. Customers making a donation can claim a 15% discount in-store that day.

Sarah Howcroft, founder of Gift Your Gear, stresses the importance of reusing outdoor gear that still has plenty of life left in it:

Most outdoor gear will last much longer than we want or need it too, its full potential is never realised. If unwanted gear is donated to Gift Your Gear not only is its useful life extended, but another person gets to experience the joy of using good gear.

James Wainwright, Business Development Manager at North Yorkshire Youth, added:

Gift Your Gear is a fantastic idea, and we’re extremely grateful for their support. Every year more than 5,000 children and young people visit Carlton Lodge Outdoor Centre from all over Yorkshire and the North East. This amazing donation will ensure that even more will benefit in the future from confidence building and learning practical new skills outdoors.
