North Yorkshire charity to get people paddling

21 August 2013

Thirsk-based charity North Yorkshire Youth has launched a new paddlesports facility thanks to Olympic legacy funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund.

The Inspired Facilities fund is part of the £135 million legacy programme that continues to bring the magic of a home Olympic and Paralympic Games to communities across the UK.
Last year North Yorkshire Youth received £39,679 of National Lottery funding to build a new boathouse at Carlton Lodge Activity Centre, replacing the existing facility which has allowed thousands of young people to enjoy the benefits of canoeing and kayaking since its construction over twenty years ago. Constructed earlier in 2013, the new facility, which offers improved storage and indoor teaching space, was formally opened last week by Lord Crathorne, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of North Yorkshire.
Designed to increase the longevity and range of paddling equipment available to visitors at Carlton Lodge, the new boathouse will see over 18,500 children and young people participate in canoeing and kayaking by the end of 2017.

Sport England’s Chair, Richard Lewis, said:

This National Lottery investment will create a lasting legacy for Hambleton. It shows we’re offering the legacy that people want for their local community.

North  Yorkshire Youth Chair of Trustees, County Councillor Carl Les (pictured left), said:

We are delighted that Lord Crathorne could open this facility for us, as his family has had a close connection with us for fifty years. This is the latest in our investments in Carlton Lodge Activity Centre, where we offer adventure, learning and discovery to help young people gain skills and self confidence.

The project has also benefitted from funding from the Thomas Cook Children’s Charity and from Hambleton District Council, which has awarded £1,600 towards additional equipment through the Hambleton & Richmondshire Strategic Forum Community Grants Scheme.
