Harrogate Hospital Radio opens its doors to the public

6 August 2013

Harrogate Hospital Radio is throwing open the doors of its studios to the public this weekend. (Saturday, 10 August 2013)

The open day is being staged by the charity broadcaster –which is based within Harrogate District Hospital – from 10am until 4pm on Saturday, August 10.

Harrogate Hospital Radio was originally formed in 1977 and, over the last 36 years, has come a long way since first going on air with only a single microphone, reel to reel tape recorder and one turn table.

Now, the station boats two studios equipped with the latest state-of-the-art broadcasting equipment.

The aim of the open day is to raise awareness of the radio station and to attract potential new volunteers. Currently, Harrogate Hospital Radio has more than 50 members ranging in age from 16 to 81.

The job of these volunteers is to undertake a variety of duties including presenting, request collecting, clerical duties, fundraising, updating the extensive music library and helping to produce shows.

Chairman of the Harrogate Hospital Radio, Ian Wighton (pictured), said:

Harrogate Hospital Radio is one the best equipped radio stations in the region and we are very proud of our facilities.

We are opening up the studios to the public so they can see for themselves the work we do. They will be able to meet members and also have a go at presenting their own show.

Mr Wighton, who presents regular weekend show, added:

Being a part of Harrogate Hospital Radio is a great way of getting involved the community and helping to make the stay of patients a little easier.
