The Coins, Tokens and Banknotes sale at Tennants Auctioneers in Leyburn on 31 July saw 276 lots go under the hammer, producing a sale total of £103,000, with only 3 lots unsold.
In the ancient and hammered coins section were some well catalogued miscellaneous groups, which collectors and dealers always enjoy viewing. Hammered lots also produced the 10 highest prices of the sale.
Securing the number one slot was an Elizabeth I gold pound depicting the Queen in an elaborate dress and weighing 10.88g (lot 35). Considering its age and the fact that it was struck by hand (or hammered) rather than milled, the clear details demonstrated its quality and condition. This very rare coin sold for £9,800.
Other top lots included a Charles I hammered gold Unite (lot 27) which made £4,800; a rare Elizabeth I gold half pound (lot 34) at £4,200, and an Edward III Noble (lot 23) at £3,600.
Milled coins, banknotes and tokens made up the bulk of the sale which attracted attention from bidders as far afield as Russia, Canada, France and Portugal.
The next sale will be on 16 October 2013 and entries are now being accepted for this auction.
